We all came together to celebrate our role

Vanessa Wood, LCNUK Member

I look forward to the next conference.

I am a lung cancer specialist nurse from Tameside hospital. I have been in this position for just over 2 years. I was invited to attend the lung cancer nurse conference that took place on the 11th and 12th of May at Eastside rooms, Birmingham.

As excited as I was to attend such an event, and hearing about past events like this,  I was still very nervous. Nervous because this was a very new thing for me, something that I had never experienced before and attending it on my own felt very daunting.

The venue chosen was in a good location with a good choice of places to stay around the surrounding area. There was a lot of stands throughout the day from different solicitors and charities all providing goodies and information on the services they provide, which were all suitable and very informative.

The two days were packed with speakers, all from different areas of lung cancer and its management. From Mesothelioma, to talks on the development of exciting new drugs and its management, all of which were very educational and relevant for a nurse-based conference.

We were spoilt with amazing food throughout the days, a beautiful 3 course meal and wine in the evening with a DJ playing the tunes well in to the night!! But what I loved most of all about the conference is that feeling of pride. The pride of being a nurse, trying to fight with patients and being their support during their most frightening battle. I felt part of a unit, and we all came together to celebrate our role. I look forward to the next conference.
