Research Interest Group (RIG)

The aim of the LCNUK Research Interest Group (RIG) is to develop and build research activity and capacity within the Forum and improve the evidence base upon which LCNUK members base their practice.

LCNUK is keen to develop research activity that would help them improve care and services within lung cancer and also develop the LCNUK's research capacity.

In addition, LCNUK hopes to facilitate collaboration and dialogue between clinical and academic colleagues and bring together experienced researchers and nurse specialists with a declared interest in lung cancer and research.

Specifically the RIG intends to  deliver the following objectives to:

  1. Share knowledge of existing research activity
  2. Provide advice to colleagues regarding research activity
  3. Identify joint research priorities
  4. Develop new research partnerships across clinical and academic communities
  5. Develop fundable research proposals based on those priorities and partnerships
  6. Identify and discuss:
    1. innovative and creative research design approaches
    2. shared knowledge on current funding options
    3. strategies to ensure appropriate user involvement in research.
  7. Facilitate the LCNUK to integrate their research and evaluation work into the wider cancer and healthcare community.

The Research Interest Group (RIG), is led and chaired by Suriya Kirkpatrick and meet 4-6 times per year for a short meeting usually 1-1.5 hours held virtually via Microsoft Teams.  If you are interested in joining the Research Interest Group please contact us to express your interest and we will ensure you are informed of RIG activities and meetings.

Current studies

The Cough and Mesothelioma Study is a qualitative research project exploring the impact of cough on quality of life of patients with mesothelioma and their carers. Mesothelioma is a devastating disease with a poor prognosis.  As time is short, effective symptom control is paramount. Cough is an under-researched and neglected symptom.  Semi-structured telephone interviews are being analysed and themes are emerging. The study will report later this year.

For further information, please contact Kate Slaven.

Kate was awarded an LCNUK Small Research Grant to support this study, learn more about our RIG grants scheme.

Research data available for LCNUK members

Your Health Companion is a valuable tool that collects data on Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), now seen as essential for improving all research. Your Health Companion uses validated tools to monitor symptoms and quality of life, including EQ5D, FACTG7, GAD2, etc. These PROMs provide insight into symptoms such as cough, fatigue, dyspnea. Providing accurate, real-time data that can help inform breakthroughs in service delivery, cancer care and treatment.

If you are a member of LCNUK, you could have access to data for your own research. To find out more contact Catherine@health-companion.me.
